I was really sick of bands just ignoring the audience as a posture in rock music. Steve Lukather
I don’t have no favorite rock bands. I’m a fan of rock music, though.

I love music, and I love drumlines. I like school bands a lot. There’s nothing wrong with cheerleading, but I’d rather be a band geek. It’s a little more interesting.

Jurnee Smollett-Bell
Geez, I wish I could tell you I had a whole bunch of ’80s hair bands, you know something you really wouldn’t expect, but I don’t know that the music police would be that surprised, because most of the stuff that I am influenced by is in evidence in the music.

Miles Teller

Jimmy Carl Black
When I started playing in bands, we had to be apologetic for what we did. We had to be apologetic because the mainstream was so bad.

Playing live is a lost art, and you don’t see a lot of bands that go out and play the way the older bands do. It’s a celebration, and a lot of people treat it like a commercial or a distraction.

Corey Taylor
Hawkwind are one of those bands that people introduce you to because you don’t see them on the covers of magazines. I’d heard ‘Silver Machine’ but Russell Senior, who was in Pulp, got me into them. Jarvis Cocker

I think most bands probably peak on their first album. We peaked on our third album. On the first album, I feel like I wish the production was a little better. I’ll always hear a song I don’t like. I look for what I could have done to make it better. It’s always difficult for me to listen.

Bruce Springsteen
I know of some guitar-based rock bands that refuse to record anything that they can’t play live. But some of the best stuff I come up with are studio-based performances – bringing out whatever accident I had in the studio and building a song around that.

We’re one of the only bands that get censored for theological commentary.

Glenn Danzig
I was in bands, like everyone else, when I was 16, 17; I was a little skater listening to Dead Kennedy’s and Steel Pole Bath Tub. It was through early 90s Hip Hop that I found my way to Soul and Funk, and then out the other side into beats.

Bonobo

Dee Dee Ramone
I think music is so diverse today, and bands are so diverse. If you were a rock band in the Eighties, you kind of had to stick to one thing. Now, in this age of Coachella and European festivals and stuff, it’s kind of anything goes, so that allowed us to try different things.

Dexter Holland
Richard Branson once said: ‘Tony’s very good at selling bands and he’s very good at making television programmes. But he’ll never be great at either, until he decides which one he wants to do.’ I entirely accept that. That doesn’t matter to me very much. I like the irony of the two lives.

Tony Wilson
Conway Twitty was always our local hero while I was growing up. He had a series of good bands. I wanted to sit in, if Conway would let me. And he did a couple of times.

Levon Helm
Bands are always told, ‘Nobody wants to hear your new stuff – just stick with the meat and potatoes – that’s what people come for.’ That’s only half-true. I know if I went to see U2, I would be thrilled if they did ‘I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,’ but I’m equally as thrilled to hear their new stuff.

Lauren Weisberger
In the 1970s, girls didn’t do anything. It wasn’t their fault. For me and the other working-class girls I hung around with, our route was plotted – you were a secretary and a wife. I wanted to hitchhike around the world, go on motorbikes, be in bands.

Viv Albertine
If heavy metal bands ruled the world, we’d be a lot better off.

I was afraid of the sophomore slump even before our first record came out. It was a very real fear because I’d watched so many bands I’d loved in the past not deliver. I knew it was a very real thing. I didn’t know why it happens, but I’d been thinking about it a lot.

Josh Homme
I mean people have compared us to like the Grateful Dead and all these like psychedelic sixties bands.

I grew up listening to The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and every record those bands put out was very unique in its own right. I have that mentality. too: if a song sounds like something I’ve already done, then I’ll throw it out, because I want each record to be a progression.

Kellin Quinn
Rock never meant the same thing to everyone, but when I was growing up in the late seventies, everyone could identify the five, ten bands that formed the center.

Chris Cornell
Bands develop their own weird ways of doing things.

Flea
I actually got into music because of art and because of skateboarding: All those graphics and punk bands and fanzines – they were glued together in my brain.

Alison Mosshart
The repercussions of what you put out and what people gravitate to in your music never registered at all. I never had that thing that maybe other bands have – a specific idea of what they are and what their sound is.

Beck
I love U.K. festivals because people go to watch as many bands as possible. They aren’t just there to see their favourites; they’ll be there all day long.

Chris Jericho
Yeah, I’ve played a lot of instruments, and I played in a lot of bands growing up, and I’ve even had to play music in a lot of films that I’ve done.

Alessandro Nivola
I think the U.K. is an amazing place and has been extremely good to me. Some of my favorite and most-listened-to bands are from England. I have met many good people there and have been in front of some of the most loyal audiences I have ever encountered.

Henry Rollins
I was always proud of the fact that Spandau and Duran Duran were like Oasis and Blur or the Beatles and The Rolling Stones – where you pick two bands of a generation and you’re either on one side or the other.

Martin Kemp
I’ve always had this passion to be creative, and wanted to sing or be in bands and make music, but I didn’t have ideas as to what format it’d be, or how I’d do it. I’m not very good with plans. I didn’t think it would be me at the front, either. In fact, I’d go as far as saying that was something I’d prevent.

Laura Mvula
I tried to sing ‘What’s Going On’ with Amy Winehouse once at an old cinema in the West End. There was a funk band that had members of both of our bands playing in it, but it was the worst kind of place to sing bad karaoke because everyone there was an amazing singer or musician.

Jamie Cullum
We’ve been gone five years and the best they could come up with was boy bands?

Jon Bon Jovi
I was in several bands before I joined Judas Priest. Being in those early unknown bands were the stepping stones, really, so I learned a lot in those short few years jumping from one band to another.

Rob Halford
As economic life relies more and more on the Internet, the potential for small bands of hackers to launch devastating attacks on the world economy is growing.

Evgeny Morozov
I first started going to shows when I was about 16 – seeing local bands. I mean, I loved music before that, and I played a bit of guitar when I was younger and thought maybe I’d become a guitar teacher or something, but when I saw other kids doing it, I was like, ‘Whoa, these are great bands! I can do it, too.’

Mac DeMarco
I was in band that played mostly covers for a while, and the bands that we would cover were, like, the alternative rock bands of that day: we did a Jane’s Addiction song and a Faith No More song. All the kind of alternative radio of that time, the late ’80s, basically.

Jason Mantzoukas
The band Grizzly Bear, I think they’re excellent. There’s a beauty and a musicality there that I wish would have been in vogue in the late ’80s, when I was forming bands.

Trent Reznor
I’ve always loved music videos – I used to make my own for bands like Pearl Jam. My favorite directors are Michel Gondry, Spike Jonze, and Patrick Daughters.

Akiva Schaffer
I grew up playing in rock bands while I was listening to rap records. I like a lot of stuff.

Ricky Reed
If I was president, of course I’d want an amendment banning boy bands, but it just wouldn’t be right, and I wouldn’t do it. Then again… I don’t want to paint myself into a corner on this one. Let me think about it.

Jessi Klein
Super-envious of the fact that Daft Punk can wear robot helmets and be one of the most famous bands in the world, while also understanding that will never be my situation.

Frank Ocean
I also have a recording studio that I use to produce bands.

Steve Brown
The bands that have been the most important to me, and the records that have been the most important to me as a fan, have been records that surprised me for one reason or another.

Steve Albini
As far as the grunge thing, there are three bands from Seattle that I would call true grunge.

Adam Jones
I think a lot of bands go on way past the point where they’re relevant. Some of them keep doing it because they’re making millions of dollars. Or people are afraid – they don’t know what else to do. It’s scary to get out of a relationship of any kind.

Dean Wareham
I started writing when I was 13. I got my first electric guitar when I was 13, but I’d always been singing. I had my first little acoustic when I was six. But I started being in bands when I was 13.

Jeff Buckley
The English scene got more media attention with their emphasis on fashion, with the safety pins and all. There were some really good bands over there. The Sex Pistols were great.

Greg Ginn
I used to love going to shows and finding new bands, but the Internet takes the fun out of it. Like a band? You can buy and download every single song they have ever done within five minutes.

Timothy Simons
I’m disappointed by bands left and right, every day.

Henry Rollins
I really hate it when I see other bands selling their music to commercials.

Robby Krieger
Of course it’s fantastic to have bands formed in garages, but there is a market for other types of music.

Rachel Stevens
I love collaborating because I come from the world of being in bands.

Brian Reitzell
You know, punk bands now sell with one record – their first or second record – sell 10 times the amount of records than the Ramones did throughout their career with 20-something records. That’s why I go over to Johnny Ramone’s house and do yard work three times a week, just to absolve some of the guilt.

Eddie Vedder
From activism to socialising to starting new bands, 99% of everything that happens on MySpace is fun and positive. But with that many people, there’s going to be a few bad apples, which presents challenges.

Chris DeWolfe
Barry White, Smokey Robinson and Curtis Mayfield are big influences for me. But I’m also a metal head. I was in a bunch of punk rock bands. The Bee Gees, hip-hop and the Beach Boys are just as much of an influence on me as Smokey.

Mayer Hawthorne
If journalists ask you again and again about the same bands, you’ll end up saying you hate them just because you’re so fed up with being asked all those stupid questions.

Billie Joe Armstrong
This hype word bothers me though It always sounds like an accusation, what does it mean, advertising, column inches in the press? Bands themselves are never really responsible for all of that. That is something that happens to you when you sell millions of records.

Holly Johnson
I think it’s natural for people to see a band and imagine themselves as part of that. That’s what I grew up fantasizing about, looking at posters of bands on my wall. There is an allure to a band.

Matthew Ramsey
I guess, for me, what started me getting real excited about music was the New York punk and new-wave scene. All those bands looked back to the Velvet Underground and the Stooges and the Modern Lovers as well. But that was back when Television were punk, and the Talking Heads were punk.

Dean Wareham
In our school, there were lots of bands putting up posters saying ‘Come to our gigs’.

Oliver Sim
You know, with bands like Kiss back out on the road and Aerosmith coming out, we are going to be a band like that, in the sense that it’s a big rock band.

Steve Brown
You see in the streets of London, great and little boys running about in long blue coats, which, like robes, reach quite down to the feet, and little white bands, such as the clergy wear.

Karl Philipp Moritz
Not many artists or bands go platinum every year, from what people have told me, so it’s an honor to have so many fans. A million people, that’s a lot of people! Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, and Justin Timberlake sell a few million, and so hopefully I’ll make my way up to that.

Phillip Phillips
Growing up, I listened to a lot of American singer/songwriters, so a lot of Tom Waits, Paul Simon – also Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan. And bands like Vampire Weekend.

George Ezra
Being in bands and plugging away with not many opportunities and no money for many years really shaped me and taught me about work ethic.

James Arthur
When I started playing, I played in R&B bands. I played James Brown, Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding and all that.

Neil Peart
The Rolling Stones are constantly changing, but beneath the changes they remain the most formal of rock bands. Their successive releases have been continuous extensions of their approach, not radical redefinitions, as has so often been the case with the Beatles.

Jon Landau
But I love singing, and I’ve been singing backup for friends’ bands.

Alia Shawkat
How movies are financed, it’s a world market now… I feel like, you know, the independent film way of working is something that was in my bones. It’s like being a part of a punk band, but no one’s singing punk rock anymore. Only a few bands are able to play, and Woody Allen is one of them.

Parker Posey
I’ve been part of five different bands in my time.

Theo James
I used to play in rock bands. Then I went to the first school of electronic music in the world. It was in Paris headed by one of the most important people involved in electronic music.

Jean-Michel Jarre
I am very much into voices. I would say I’m a fan of voices, not of sound. I’m a fan of singers, not of bands.

Christian Louboutin
Instead, of worrying if something will be a hit, bands need to go out and make good music, get a following, play live. That’s how you make a career these days.

Jaimoe
Rock ‘n’ roll accepted me and paid me, even though I loved the big bands… I went that way because I wanted a home of my own. I had a family. I had to raise them. Let’s don’t leave out the economics. No way.

Chuck Berry
I actually had a really nice guitar as a teenager. I took jazz guitar, so my mom bought me this probably $1,600 guitar. But I got really into garage rock and local bands, and I noticed they played really crappy guitars. So I thought, ‘Hey, I should get a crappy guitar, too!’

Mac DeMarco
Most people know we’re kind of one of the only bands around right now that will admit that we’re Republican.

M. Shadows
Imagine a music business where all the music press talked about, all day long, was cover bands of old rock and pop groups. Beatles cover bands, Rolling Stones cover bands, The Who cover bands, Led Zeppelin cover bands. Cover bands, cover bands, everywhere you go.

Antony Johnston
I don’t think any punk bands really ever got their due.

Glenn Danzig
I was a dog groomer. I delivered radiators; I was a photography producer. I typed classified ads for many years. It was my longest term job – years of typing classified ads while I was in bands.

Janet Weiss
It’s funny, when bands or younger musicians ask me: ‘So, what does it take to make it?’ Well, first explain to me what you mean by ‘making it’: Do you want to be a rock star or do you want music to be your livelihood?

Eddie Van Halen
The ’80s were the worst period. You had these horrible pop bands growing their hair and calling themselves metal.

Geezer Butler
It’s something I’ve always been passionate about – which is the power of rock and roll itself. I’m a walking example of its power, ’cause I was totally altered in the seminal years of Live by bands like U2 and R.E.M., U2 in particular.

Ed Kowalczyk
Wallace and Gromit’s contraptions are created purely for gags, but we all have the urge to invent – especially children. If they’re bored, kids will make something from cardboard boxes, yoghurt pots, tape and elastic bands. Often, those constructions are the best.

Nick Park
My father was a studio musician, played for a lot of people like Frank Zappa and a lot of R&B bands, and was always gone doing that. Then when he was home, he was practicing. And so I always saw it, and I always wanted to do what he did.

Synyster Gates
I’m still waiting for rock bands to come back, something raw and relevant.

Greg Kurstin
Growing up, I went to the Warped Tour a lot, and I got to see bands like Rancid and AFI and Dropkick Murphys and these bands that meant so much to me when I was a kid – all in succession on these stages, so to get to play that same stage that I watched those bands play is a huge thing for me.

Andy Biersack
Restaurants remind me of bands: there’s lots of camaraderie, people work very closely together, very hard, and it’s a bad job to pick if you want to make lots of money. Whether music or food, the reward always has to be because you love it.

James Murphy
Girl bands still do just copy the way men move onstage. To me, that is so backwards, so un-radical.

Viv Albertine
When I get 13 or 14 years old, I get crazy with rock music, like, like, deeply crazy. And one of my favorite bands at that moment was, for example, like – bands like Metallica or Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd and Santana, you know? And then I start to play metal, actually, when I was – at the age of 15.

Juanes
In high school, I listened to The Jam, stuff like that, a lot of English bands, really. And then I got into anarcho-punk bands that nobody had heard of.

Jamie Hince
I had different bands. I played with the Acoustic Warriors for the most part, without girl singers. It was the same kind of sound, acoustic guitar, bass, with violin and sometimes accordion, and the guys would sing, that kind of thing.

Dan Hicks
There I met Gordon Jackson and Dave Meredith who were playing in local bands.

Jim Capaldi
The REM and Nirvana successes don’t mean much to me except as a potential distraction for bands who want to cash in on the trend. Don’t try to sound like someone else. REM and Nirvana don’t sound like anyone else.

Greg Ginn
I’ve always been in rock bands. I was in a rock band with my brother in high school. Then I was playing classical guitar recitals, and people said, ‘You know, you can’t really do both things.’ My intuition told me they were wrong. Somehow, what was interesting about me was that I had those two things in my life.

Bryce Dessner
I’m very excited that my yelling will be featured on the next Evile disc; they’re one of my favorite new-ish bands and, in my not-so-humble opinion, the British saviors of thrash metal.

Brian Posehn
It’s all a progression towards hopefully one day making a record that can be the definitive you can offer. Some bands come in with that at first, and the great bands never really stray from that. I want to earn my stripes.

Paolo Nutini
I meet many people, I talk with them, like a TV show host. I show what’s going on with Greenpeace, interesing political things, I have artists, musicians and bands.

Nina Hagen
In the past, I played in bands, worked at coffee shops, babysat, and worked as a production assistant.

Tig Notaro
I hate it when bands do that; they’re so proud of their new album, they have to play all of it and a couple of golden oldies.

Ville Valo
I used to play in bands and my dad, he’s a big Beatles fan, so I grew up on a lot of Beatles and you kind of find your own way in music.

Charlie Heaton
In grade one and two, I was definitely into heavy metal and Satanic rock music, bands that had attributes that were quote-unquote ‘Satanic,’ even things like the Rolling Stones with ‘Their Satanic Majesties Request’ and ‘Sympathy for the Devil,’ but also like Motley Crue and Kiss and Alice Cooper.

Tobias Forge
I’ve asked these guys in rock bands with all the 18-wheelers driving to the venue how they make money. I just don’t understand it. But I don’t understand a lot of things.

Ron White
I know I’d feel emotional if one of my favorite bands was going out.

Nikki Sixx
My friends always had bands, and we would play together.

King Tuff
One of the first bands to break out of Seattle was Heart.

Layne Staley
The thing about rock is that people are not just interested in bands because of where they want to go. It’s where they want to escape from that matters.

Colin Greenwood
The Ramones were inspiring a lot of bands that couldn’t master their instruments.

Tommy Ramone
Yes, there were piano bands and great rock pianists, from Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard to Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman, and Elton John. But something about the electric guitar speaks of more than music – it epitomizes and gives voice to the rebellion, power, and sexuality of rock.

Daniel Levitin
Some bands blow it before they even play. The most important moment of any show is when a band walks out with the red amp lights glowing, the flashlight that shows each performer the way to his spot on the stage. It’s crucial not to blow it. It sets the tempo of the show; it affects everyone’s perception of the band.

Johnny Ramone
I’ve built my whole life around loving music. I’m a writer for ‘Rolling Stone,’ so I am constantly searching for new bands and soaking up new sounds.

Rob Sheffield
Ninety percent of all music is always crap, and when too many people decide they’re going to have guitar bands, then ninety percent of them are going to be crap. It’s just a given law.

David Byrne
I hate when bands make beige, middle-of-the-road music. I guess you can say ‘Lonerism’ is the war on beige music.

Kevin Parker
Certainly, there are huge, multiplatinum bands whose singers command their audience’s attention. Sadly, much of the time they have little to say.

Henry Rollins
Too many bands record an album and feel, ‘Well, this is okay,’ but after a time, they grow to not like it.

Brian Fallon
I’m not a guy who grew up in theater. I’ve always played in rock bands.

David Bryan
The north of the Central African Republic is now a war zone, with rival armed bands burning villages, kidnapping children, robbing travelers and killing people with impunity.

Nicholas Kristof
I started bands at a pretty young age and played with my friends back in Detroit. I’ve always known that I wanted to do this. It was all I was ever interested in doing. I never had, outside of music, any extracurricular activities that I took part in.

Alex Winston
Rock n’ roll was one thing, and then they chopped off the ‘roll’ and called it ‘rock,’ which became a sort of umbrella term for anything with a guitar in it. Like hair bands. How could we possibly believe that? It’s just gotten downright silly, to the point where now it’s sort of become like professional wrestling.

Tom Petty
Let’s point out the elephant in the room: Actor bands are not notoriously successful enterprises. I can’t think of any.

Michael Shannon
Hey bands, you’re all welcome to fly me to some exotic location and I’ll record you there, Y’know that right? You don’t have to come to this God forsaken place. Hope I can visit you all in Australia one of these days that would be hot! We’ll talk again soon.

Jim Diamond
My style is part of the music I like, the bands I see, the people I surround myself with, the places I go to.

Alice Dellal
I heard during our label-searching that some labels hire statisticians instead of A&R people. They’ll reach out to the bands that will statistically perform best monetarily instead of going out to shows and having an opinion on which music is good or bad.

Lucy Dacus
Most bands don’t make it past two albums and tours, if that. We pulled it off, and everybody’s been happy and cool, but we got to the point where we knew it was time to take a break.

Dimebag Darrell
Even as a kid, if I would come across something cool in the record store, that would be how I found out about bands. It’s kind of the same way these days. In a way even less because there are no record stores to go to anymore.

Scott Ian
LCD live was set up to be an argument about what’s wrong with bands and why bands should be better. I always thought that we were so obviously not a great band, comically not a great band. I was not a great front man.

James Murphy
Even though The Cure helped pioneer the jangly, dance-oriented guitar and keyboard style it continues to embrace, there are other bands that now employ the post-punk style with greater flair. This leaves The Cure’s live presentation seeming a bit anonymous.

Robert Hilburn
No, I’m sure that there’s a lot of L.A. bands out there.

Josh Silver
One month I’ll be completely obsessed with Bob Dylan and the next Arcade Fire. I like early Elton John and David Bowie, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. I listen to a lot of American bands. But I like listening to new bands, too.

Tom Odell
Most bands don’t even last fourteen months let alone fourteen years.

Peter Steele
I got my influences from ’70s bands – Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, blah blah blah. When I was growing up, we had all these crazy bands on the Top 40. Today, if Pink Floyd released ‘Money,’ it wouldn’t even get played.

Al Jourgensen
Maybe if they start playing new rock bands videos, then maybe but there is no point in a guy like me spending 250 grand for a video that no one is ever going to see.

Sebastian Bach
The Rolling Stones were one of the best bands ever, and ‘Sticky Fingers’ is one of the best rock albums I’ve ever heard.

Buzz Osborne
AC/DC, Def Leppard, Alice Cooper – I learned stories of all these guys. That’s when I fell in love with Queen, which is one of my favorite bands of all time… I started paying attention to what made music good. I started paying attention to why I liked it.

Rico Love
I feel nowadays a lot of bands can be too overly produced. There’s something about the leather pants and bare bodies and Axl Rose running back and forth on a stage and going crazy. I love all that.

Malin Akerman
I tweeted once that I was jealous of bands like All Time Low ’cause they get so many bras thrown at them. So, now fans throw bras with messages written in them.

Chrissy Costanza
With the Internet, bands can come and go every five minutes and the music looks disposable.

Bruce Dickinson
I feel sorry for these kids in bands. Everything is so disposable nowadays. These kids don’t even get 15 minutes of fame, it’s like a minute and a half.

Zakk Wylde
By now all rock bands are wise enough to be suspicious of music industry scum.

Steve Albini
We had to take full advantage of the fact that we wanted to be one of the most creative bands out there that’s getting backed by one of the biggest companies.

Zacky Vengeance
I don’t think a lot of bands and artists work as hard as we do on the creation, on the writing, the arrangements and the recording in our format.

Zac Brown
I hate the industry even more now, no bands get nurtured anymore. Labels only spend money promoting acts they know will be Top Ten. I find it offensive spending $2 million on a video.

Siouxsie Sioux
I love what I do and the music I make and the bands I’ve done, especially Fall Out Boy. I also love what I love, and I don’t care if other people like it.

Joe Trohman
I know there’s bands that might write something that sounds like The Smiths, and they’ll go, ‘Oh, it sounds like The Smiths, we’ve got to make it sound not like The Smiths.’

Noel Gallagher
I mean, most of it is probably more obscure and just more noisy than either of those two bands, but Thurston has stuff all the time that he’s involved with that is fairly obscure and experimental.

Kim Gordon
Just getting movies made is difficult because it takes a lot of money; I mean, it costs more money to make one movie than most bands will spend on every single record of their entire career; it’s a huge undertaking.

Rob Zombie
There’s no problem with fans and bands. There’s a problem with the economics of the outside disruption of the industry.

Isaac Hanson
I had gone full-on folkie; I’d had it with bands.

Dan Fogelberg
One of my main problems with music is that the basic formula is always the same: verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, verse, chorus, chorus, chorus, end. One of the bands that changed that was The Beatles. If you listen to ‘Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey.’ It’s three verses, bridge, end.

Buzz Osborne
I’m a big Black Crowes guy. I think they are one of America’s greatest rock & roll bands ever.

Darius Rucker
I would see people on TV, or I’d see bands I really liked, and I thought, ‘I want that.’

Fred Armisen
We used to play the Savoy Ballroom, and we always had a boogie tune in the set. Bands like Tommy Dorsey used to do a little boogie woogie. The big bands.

Jay McShann
Synthesizers were looked at as stealing the soul of music, but then there were these new bands who used it to contradict that idea.

Brendon Urie
KISS has always been outside of the borders of what other bands can do. Not that some of these other bands wouldn’t want to do it – the fact that they may snicker or look down their noses at what we do is more out of jealously than anything else.

Paul Stanley
I believe that the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin are two of the greatest rock bands ever!

Jesse Ventura
I can understand why those bands do it. It can be a hell of a lot of bloody fun. People are allowed to have a bit of fun after the age of 40, and a lot of them do need the money.

Nik Kershaw
Most bands are commercial enterprises. But I’m not in one of those bands.

David Johansen
Australia is so entrenched in rock n’roll and bands, and that’s just the way Australia is.

Ricki-Lee Coulter
In many ways Bright Eyes is really a studio project. We form bands to tour, but it really is – you know, we take the songs and we figure out how to decorate them and it’s all in the studio; we build the songs that way.

Conor Oberst
There is a lot to say about what Bikini Kill and other ‘riot grrrl’ bands were able to achieve when they first set out. They were not some momentary, convulsive, creative spasm of independent music. There was a very real, relevant point of view being expressed.

Henry Rollins
The pirating thing is bad. The people it hurts the most are the ones you least think it hurts. It’s not the big Britney Spears albums that are being pirated; it’s the indie bands that don’t have two cents to their name.

Rob Zombie
Bands in the Nineties seem to forget the entertainment aspect of rock music.

Matt Bellamy
I’m surprised that we’re around still. A lot of the bands that we came out with are not around.

Mike McCready
Irony is the recourse of the weak-minded wimp, I think. I hate bands that deliver their songs with knowing smiles on their faces, so that if those songs fall flat they can say ‘Ah well, we never really meant it anyway.’ It’s so dishonest.

Robert Smith
Most bands have a two-year success rate. By the third year, it’s sort of over. Here we are in Poison still together 26 years later.

Bret Michaels
I am just touched at how strongly the real Hed-heads feel. It feels different from other kinds of devotees; maybe it’s the way I felt with certain bands when I was a kid. It feels like a band more than a play.

John Cameron Mitchell
I’ve always been a huge Butthole Surfers fan. The first time I saw them was in the early ’80s when all they had out was their first EP. I thought they were amazing. They’ve always been a huge influence and one of my all-time favorite bands.

Buzz Osborne
Playing in my early bands, working as a studio musician, producing and going to art school was, in retrospect, my apprenticeship. I was learning and creating a solid foundation of ideas, but I wasn’t really playing music.

Jimmy Page
When I was 20, in 1957, and maybe you would say I was old enough to know better, but nevertheless, I was completely nuts about Buddy Holly. And I loved pop bands that had absolutely no intellectual pretensions whatsoever. I loved the Monkees.

Tom Stoppard
Sadly, I’ve seen a lot of bands hit that sort of peak and then eventually start supporting again, you know, which we will never do. We always put a lot of thought into the way that we are going to go, and we always change.

Glenn Tipton
Opening for certain acts after so many years of headlining obviously made us resentful. It was kind of hard watching all these bands, who I really believed didn’t deserve to be on top musically, going ahead and pushing us out.

Robin Zander
Bringing exercise bands, ankle weights, and a jump rope is a great way to work out while you’re traveling. You can find amazing workout videos online to help with your training.

Shanina Shaik
I think that’s why so many school bands start on guitars: because they hide their mistakes with the distortion.

Winston Marshall
Musically, I have more things in common with tons of bands that have no female members.

St. Vincent
One of the great bands we opened up for was Priest back in ’89. That was really great because at that time we had never met them, never toured with them before. They were a big influence on Slayer, so to open up for them was really cool.

Dave Lombardo
I’m like a middle-aged person; when my friends go on about modern bands, I don’t know what they are talking about. I’m into rock n’ roll, like Jimi Hendrix. Not so much because of my parents, who used to play a lot of Nina Simone and older blues, but my brother and sister.

Georgia May Jagger
Bands should never break up.

Steven Van Zandt
My tastes are pretty varied. For instance, I love Wilco. But it’s considered dad rock. It’s one of my favorite bands, and yet I find it impossible not to think of myself as a dad-in-training when I listen to it.

Jesse Andrews
Every band wants to be have a song that is that big, that will pretty much live on forever. I don’t know too many new bands that will have a ‘Free Bird’ that will be around 30 years later. It’s become a national anthem of sorts.

Rickey Medlocke
I guess all bands get to that point where they run out of inspiration and just get bored with the chemistry.

Dolores O’Riordan
The Sex Pistols came through Atlanta, and I got to go see them. That was historic. It blew me away; it was so much fun. I bought 45s of bands you don’t hear about anymore.

Cindy Wilson
There are bands that I got into when I was 15, when I was mad at my dad and just wanted to be different. I don’t think I’d give those bands half a chance now. But I hold some kind of nostalgia for them that I won’t let go. Bands like Minor Threat and Black Flag.

Pete Wentz
There are no great jazz-fusion bands.

Prince
Blackfoot was one of the ultimate live bands… there was no pretense, no gimmickry; it was sound, lights, and rock and roll. Our whole goal was to be terrifying… to strike fear and cause havoc in a closing band’s minds.

Rickey Medlocke
A lot of the guys that I date and my friends are all in bands.

Audrina Patridge
Music was my first love, and at Marlborough we put bands together and sang the pop songs of the day. Although I couldn’t read or write music – I still can’t – I taught myself to play the guitar and piano by listening to songs and working out the chords.

Chris de Burgh
Megadeth is a legend, and I’m not gonna cheapen it like some of these bands that keep going long after they should.

Dave Mustaine
Bands can become absolutely huge and actually be pretty terrible musicians, and bands can be the most amazing songwriters and musicians in the world and never play for more than 10 people. With that in mind, getting successful doesn’t mean anything.

Kevin Parker
I’m not into bands for the sake of being into bands. I’ve grown past that. There was a time in my life when I was that guy.

Pete Wentz
All of the punk-rock bands of the era would come in and play, and my job on Punk Rock Night was that I would go into the slam pit, and… I was 24 or 25, and I’d slam dance in the pit.

William Forsythe
I love Les Beaux Peeps. Everyone in that band works together really well. I used to go out to see bands a lot; now it seems there just aren’t any I like.

Clea Duvall
My favorite thing to do in L.A. is to be in a car with friends listening to music. The perfect time is twilight, when the setting sun is filtering through the palm trees. Back in the day, we’d be listening to the Vandals, X, or Farside. Now it would be L.A.-based bands like Dum Dum Girls, Foxygen, or Ty Segall.

Liz Goldwyn
Yo La Tengo were a major inspiration for me because they’re one of the first bands that I got into on my own, separate from my parents, when I was in high school. I have all their albums. That’s the place we’d like be in someday.

Lucy Dacus
You know, I have a really tough time finding new bands.

Joan Jett
I think a lot of bands are creatively knackered when they come off tour.

Alex Kapranos
Now I’m fortunate to have a good band in CA, and play many solo gigs as well. My point is that I stopped playing in bands and played solo for four years, to get back into the groove and pulse of writing and singing and who I am on stage.

Arthur Godfrey
Music, for me, is as important as fashion. The first visuals I remember are Elvis Presley, David Bowie, New Romantics, and different punk bands.

Edward Enninful
Bands like Culture Club and artists like me, you tend to concentrate on the live arena because that’s where you can be your most authentic. That’s where you have the most power.

Boy George
I followed most of the 80’s bands into the 90’s as most of those folks who hadn’t moved away were all still active. However, there was a point when I lost track of the new bands coming up.

Mark Edwards
Before ‘Local Hero,’ I’d been knocking about Glasgow in rock bands, drinking too much and generally being 21. My opinion of actors was that they were straight and boring, so you see, I was completely unprepared for being one.

Peter Capaldi
Now I’m having the time of my life being on the road with one of the world’s all-time great big bands, and performing with symphonies. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Doc Severinsen
Authentic rock and roll is a sound that I’ve always been drawn to with bands like Brand New and Jimmy Eat World.

Ryan Hurd
My whole back’s tattooed. I just wanted a twist. I was always in punk bands when I was little… I think that’s where the tie comes from.

Gary Allan
I feel like bands should be growing, living, functioning entities and to crystallize a band into a single album, and for that to be a touchstone – I understand it from a fan’s perspective but I also feel like it’s a little bit misleading in terms of the way bands actually function.

Steve Albini
If I go see a band, and they play, like, zero from any of their old albums, I’m very happy about that. I do not want to see the bands of my youth playing the songs of my youth. I hate that.

John Darnielle
This man is freed from servile bands, Of hope to rise, or fear to fall; Lord of himself, though not of lands, And leaving nothing, yet hath all.

Lord Byron
It’s the faster bands that made me want to play guitar, bands like The Jam.

Graham Coxon
Because you have things like ‘American Idol’ and you’ve got radio stations that play music made entirely by computers, it’s easy to forget there are bands with actual people playing actual instruments that rock.

Dave Grohl
I started going to Madame Louise’s, the lesbian club where all the punk bands used to go – the Sex Pistols, the Clash. I remember seeing Billy Idol walk in there; he was gorgeous.

Boy George
I sang in bands as a kid. In high school, I was already on the road doing a single. And that’s no fun. Then came ‘Wonder Woman’ and children.

Lynda Carter
Kerrang asked us to do a heavy metal tribute to one of our favorite heavy metal bands. We had already been jamming out on ‘Walk,’ so we’re like, ‘OK. We’ll record it for you guys.’

Johnny Christ
In hip-hop, what you have is you have a lot of formulaic-type bands or rappers that come up. They saw something on the radio, and they want to mimic that formula. And that’s just boring. I don’t wanna record something just to make money; I want to record something to enjoy it and have fun because I’m a music lover.

Sir Mix-a-Lot
We didn’t realize there were that many boy bands until we started touring in Europe. I don’t think we were ever affected by it since a lot of the groups in Europe didn’t really sing live, but we did and would perform a cappella as well.

A. J. McLean
I guess the way to keep a grip on reality is just to take breaks in between albums like most normal bands do. Go home and be a person and hang out with your friends. Do separate things and get back to earth and write songs and go out there again.

Dolores O’Riordan
I just feel like bands always need to work harder than the hardest working band. You need to constantly be one-upping yourself and surprising yourself at how hard that you’ll work and devote yourself to your craft.

Hayley Williams
Boys in bands are more difficult to deal with than one-year-old babies. I’ve been one of them, and I am one of them, but it is the truth.

Pete Wentz
It seems like bands have stopped making timeless, great rock albums like they did back in the day.

Jonathan Davis
But there’s actually a lot of punk bands out there that go out of the norm, use odd time signatures, or a lot of different tempo changes in a song.

Travis Barker
Being 16 years old and getting an electric guitar is never going to get old. There’s always going to be kids making music. There’s always going to be kids in bands.

Dan Auerbach
When I was running the Troubadour, there was this transition from the classic singer/songwriter Jackson Browne types to bands like Black Flag, the Dead Kennedys, and Fear. Those are just some that come to mind. Oh, and Adam Ant! The Fear fans wanted to ‘crush’ the Ants. These guys hated each other.

Jon Taffer
You watch movies and see bands you like and copy them and see what you can hold. I mean, it’s all down to how you hold what you wear.

Albert Hammond, Jr.
We were lumped into the Lite Metal radio bands.

Kip Winger
The library companies have made it so that music is so cheap to license. They do sound-alikes of every band, and it makes it harder for the actual bands to get any decent paychecks for licensing.

Brian Reitzell
Record covers still inspire me in terms of clothes, some bands just look sharp. But I still wear stuff I owned when I was 16.

Alison Mosshart
We were playing a small club in San Diego and the power had gone out in the building. Eddie had a lighter and kept us lit backstage. We became very good friends and spent a lot of time together including hearing Eddie sing in some of the bands he was in at the time.

Jack Irons
I don’t think I’m an entertainer. I never think, ‘Wow, I can’t wait to get the crowd moving.’ Some of my favorite bands never moved an inch.

Ric Ocasek
I didn’t even know that small bands played in Las Vegas. I just thought it was, like, Celine Dion and stuff.

Kevin Parker
This is my own little rock theory: In my mind, Nirvana slayed the hair bands. They shot the top off the poodles.

Henry Rollins
There’s a lot of bands that get to a certain level, and it just stops. They scrap it. Compare this to, say, The Rolling Stones or The Who, where they just continued on forever and are still playing, or they quit after 20 years.

Eddie Vedder
In high school I wanted to be a rock star and was in a lot of bands.

Adam Sandler
Music lives in my mother – she’s played in bands in Detroit and toured and did the whole thing. So I have somebody who’s done it all to just talk to. And we write songs together.

Amy Lee
England is a profoundly bizarre place that has produced thousands of bands the world has worshipped.

Gene Simmons
A lot of bands have the enthusiasm kicked out of them by playing really dreary pub venues that just churn bands through.

Alex Kapranos
It’s much easier to work on other people’s music and play in other people’s bands as a guitar player instead of being the main songwriter and singer. That’s a really big job to do that.

James Iha
Everyone loves to complain that there are no real bands on MTV, yet no one wants to step up to the plate and try to change that.

Zacky Vengeance
B-52’s are one of the most unique bands, not just sonically but aesthetically, too. When you look at them, you know it’s the B-52’s.

Brendon Urie
Bands like Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream, who I respect, have a very robotic, dehumanised approach. They’re almost an apology for machines. It’s very German.

Jean-Michel Jarre
I named it that because more or less each person from the band used to play in other bands and when we left respective bands other members from those bands all sort of changed round. It was a big sort of move thing. I got it from that, I suppose.

Roy Wood
Friends of friends had bands in college or in their early 20s and had a moment where they had some kind of interest from a record label or manager. It’s always interesting how people handle those decisions and those moments.

Noah Baumbach
I grew up right in the heart of Treme, so it was a real music neighborhood, and there was a bunch of bands like the Dirty Dozen Brass Band around.

Trombone Shorty
I never felt bad about being lumped in with other Seattle bands. I thought it was great.

Chris Cornell
There were definitely bands and musicians I liked that drove my mother insane. I probably liked them all the more for it! Bjork drove my mom nuts. What I listened to was actually pretty mom-friendly for the most part. I wasn’t very rebellious.

Gillian Jacobs
A lot of bands whine about the road and how tough it is.

Dimebag Darrell
Not many people are able to say that they had in their professional career the chance to perform in two bands that won Grammys and were multiplatinum bands.

Scott Weiland
I can show bands how to produce themselves. In the same way, many bands think you can’t make it without some fat cat in London or New York to manage you. That’s just crap. All you need is someone a bit older than you with a bit of business nous whom you trust.

Johnny Marr
I love British bands.

Taylor Momsen
So when bands work with me and it’s 10 o’clock, usually you’d have to be getting out of the studio, we could go on until 2 in the morning cause it’s my place!

Billy Sherwood
I’m always put in the unfortunate position of asking people to donate money and people I know in bands to play benefit concerts and all this stuff.

Flea
When I was a teenager in the ’70s, I was really into those great bands like Led Zeppelin and Queen and Jethro Tull, Deep Purple, Alice Cooper.

Steve Vai
The south is very focused on family… the musical heritage of Muscle Shoals especially and the bands from the region.

Jason Isbell
There are a lot of bands coming up now that are literally thrusting their soul, their passion into something that fans can pay for a ticket to go see, and they know it’s going to be awe-inspiring.

Grace Potter
I would try and sing along with bands that I like but it sounded so atrocious that I couldn’t.

Joaquin Phoenix
It’s amazing to me to see how bands evolve and how they take all their influences and come up with their own sound.

Debbie Harry
I started playing guitar at, like, 12 or 13 and just rock bands mostly. I had a punk rock band and hard core bands and all that.

Oscar Isaac
From the very beginning, I had a lot of female role models in music. I would go to shows, and there were always women fronting bands and playing guitar or backing up and playing drums or bass in a band. That probably contributed to my belief in myself to go out and perform for people.

Lucy Dacus
I think metal fans are more loyal than other fans, and they are often more inclined to collect the albums of their favorite bands.

Varg Vikernes
I’m sure Sting’s a lovely guy. It’s just that nobody wants to be seen as that holier-than-thou thing. That over-earnestness is a bit of a problem with people in bands and celebrities or whatever.

Jarvis Cocker
A lot of big labels will just sign bands like a write off.

Adam Rich
From the food to the Mardi Gras Indians to the brass bands and the second liners parading through the street, Jazz Fest presents New Orleans in one place.

Trombone Shorty
It’s hard for people to realize now, but my gosh, when I was in school, you could not name a group that was less cool than Kiss. Going in to school with a Kiss T-shirt, you were asking for ridicule. In ’77, they were one of the biggest bands in the world, but by ’80, there was a severe backlash.

Eddie Trunk
I’m trying to help Apple Music be an overall movement in popular culture, everything from unsigned bands to video.

Jimmy Iovine
My roots and Victor’s are jazz, basically, but these two young fellows that we have with us come out of rock bands. And they’re tremendously exciting players.

Chico Hamilton
It accumulates over the years and I’ve led so many bands of my own now and forced myself into new situations… You would hope that you play better and better – until you just get too feeble to do it anymore.

Andy Summers
For me, naming bands was the forerunner to really writing lyrics, because I work off titles.

The average life spans of many bands are not that long, up to five years if they are lucky.

Mike McCready
When I was 16, 17 years old, I became aware of music coming out of Olympia, Wash., which is the state capitol and about an hour south of Seattle. And there were bands like Bikini Kill and Bratmobile and Heavens To Betsy, and for the first time, I heard my story being explained to me, being sung to me.

Carrie Brownstein
If you want to be negative about the whole thing you can say all guitar bands after the Beatles were just a waste of time because the Beatles were the best. I think it’s far better to give new records a try.

Stephen Malkmus
That’s what so sad about a lot of modern music, in my opinion, so many young bands never stay around long enough to fulfill their ultimate promise. They only get halfway there or a quarter of the way there.

Alan Vega
We want to stay on this tour bus together as long as we possibly can. I’m sure a lot of bands are like, ‘I need my own space.’ But we don’t. I want to be with these guys forever.

Hillary Scott
My father was an actor. Both of my older brothers are actors. My younger sister is an actress. For me, that’s my job; that’s my craft. But then all through school and through drama school, I was gigging and running nights and playing in bands, and I just didn’t want to let that go.

Johnny Flynn
Being in several, disparate bands is what I thrive on.

Trevor Dunn
When I was growing up listening to music, it was 2004, when The Starting Line and Finch and The Used were kind of my favorite bands.

Kellin Quinn
A lot of times you’ll hear bands and it’s a different sound coming out than what’s on stage. Because you can clean it up through a PA and make it sound completely different than what they really sound like.

I was a fan of One Direction when I was 16, but I was also a fan of Bring Me The Horizon and hardcore bands.

Halsey
There are loads of bands I’d love to produce.

Alex Kapranos
Bands like R.E.M. and even The Replacements, during that initial wave of college rock, would sell 40, 50, 100,000 copies of a record, and that would be seen as extremely successful – and definitely enough to keep doing more.

Adam Schlesinger
I hope we can keep doing it this way – making music and art that are pure products of our influences while not really having to let the whole celebrity side of it get in the way. Then maybe more virtual bands will come out and do the same thing.

Damon Albarn
I usually have three to four bands a year going at any given point.

Mike Portnoy
Rock n’ roll as a genre is different from pop and hip hop: it is about bands, and that for me suggests brotherhood, family, friendship and community.

Steven Van Zandt
When I was around 13 years old, I started playing in bands and became obsessed with Blink-182 and Newfound Glory. I didn’t pay attention to country music anymore; I wanted to do more pop rock stuff.

Cassadee Pope
There are a lot of bands that my parents used to go see that I haven’t necessarily heard of, and asking them to dig up stuff like that is a really fun way to discover music.

Liv Bruce
I kind of idolized older punk-rock and hip-hop bands, and I was, like, 15 when I started the Beastie Boys. And what business did we having doing that at that age?

Mike D
I feel like the expectations have gone up. It’s not a complaint, but it’s a little intimidating. People are like, ‘Oh, you’re on Matador. It’s kind of a legendary label – you’re going to have to live up to all those other bands.’ I guess it’s not that explicit.

Lucy Dacus
I grew up in Southern California. I played in rock bands out here, and I’ve been around pop music my whole life. I’ve been around all music my entire life.

Adam Jones
Other bands gave us lip service, but when it came down to it they kind of backed off. That was a little disheartening. But I respect them. That’s their business.

Mike McCready
A lot of other bands have tried to go out there and say we’ve got views on this and views on that. But some of it I’ve found opportunist. Duran Duran has always been honest about everything. We’ve always laid everything out.

Nick Rhodes
Growing up, I always wanted to be in punk bands, so I’m really enjoying the harder, heavier element. It’s always been my dream to have people moshing at my gig, kind of that really feral element of the music coming out more. I love crowd-surfing.

Florence Welch
I know when I started I would have been happy to sound like the Beatles or Joe Tex or whoever. You want to sound like most bands, you want to sound like their records and that’s how you learn your chops.

Jon Anderson
I was someone who grew up obsessed with bands, how they were and how they treated one another, and how they treated fans.

James Murphy
When I was young, my ambitions were very modest. I thought, ‘If only I could play at the battle of the bands at the Y, that would be the culmination of existence!’ And then the roller rink, and you work your way up branch by branch.

Neil Peart
One thing I love to do is produce. I’ve produced a couple of bands. I mean, nothing ever really happened with ’em, but I enjoy getting a young band into the studio and guiding them, and making them feel at ease.

Ace Frehley
I think we’re just one of those bands that we know what we do best.

Angus Young
My main problem with Norwegian Black Metal is that almost all the bands from 1992-1993 are made up of rats, who ratted each other out and blamed me for everything that went wrong in the scene. I really don’t want to be associated with them in any way.

Varg Vikernes
When I was in top 40 bands, I always had to learn new material and new styles.

Babyface
There are a lot of bands who would get really big in Fort Worth and play shows on a Friday night that everybody would come out to. But I’ve never been really big in my hometown. My shows would have 10 or 15 people at them.

There’s a whole apparatus for indie bands now, but back in the eighties it was just getting built. The early people really took it on the chin.

Michael Azerrad
Generally speaking, I like all music, but Pink Floyd and Muse are my favorite bands.

Annalise Basso
I understand the rock star deal having been one and still going out strapping my guitar on and performing. Now, I probably do 30 or 40 dates a year and I get to relive how I felt at 19 when I played in some really bad bands.

David Cassidy
And, well of course, Count Basie, and I think all of the black bands of the late thirties and early forties, bands with real players. They had an influence on everybody, not just drummers.

Buddy Rich
I like giving music-themed gifts. I’ve given a couple of music documentaries to boys. Especially if they don’t have the same taste as me, I try to infiltrate their mind with my favourite bands.

Bella Heathcote
My favorite bands were Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Jethro Tull, Uriah Heep, Grand Funk Railroad. If you listen to some of my early music, you can hear it.

Bruno Mars
There should be a lot of bands like the Go-Go’s out there, but there aren’t.

Belinda Carlisle
I had written movie scores, television series, played with other people. Carl had done the same with Asia, with other bands, everything. We weren’t about to entrust Greg automatically with a production credit.

Keith Emerson
I played with local bands and ended up touring with Scissor Sisters, Mylo, Alphabeat, and Calvin Harris. That somehow changed into DJ’ing.

I like all music. Well, I don’t like music that was created to make money. I don’t really like bands that don’t write their own music.

James Marsters
I’m a fan of music, some rock music. But I like many types of music. But I suppose a kind of longstanding love of specific bands would be Radiohead, Wilco, Neil Young, Tom Waits, REM.

Toni Collette
It’s now taken for granted that women are in bands and you can say feminist things in your songs. But back in the early ’90s, there was a lot of violence at Bikini Kill shows that people don’t realize happened.

Kathleen Hanna
If you don’t realize that there are great rock bands out there, you should look for them.

Brian Setzer
It’s kinda weird sometimes going on tour with bands because you never really know what to expect.

Kellin Quinn
Back when Napster first came along, I started telling everybody Napster was like shooting yourself in the foot because you’re stealing music. The record companies don’t pay for us to make records – the bands do.

Butch Trucks
Well… I had braces and I had to wear headgear! I loved my braces, actually. For me, they were like a piece of jewelry! Instead of the silver or pewter I had gold braces. It was so much fun, I loved them. I got to change the colors and stuff and I had the rubber bands.

Jordin Sparks
I definitely listened to country music. I don’t think I listened to hair bands as much as I did Bruce Springsteen and U2 and Aerosmith.

Julianne Hough
I got one of the best sax players in the business – Arno Hecht. He plays with the Uptown Horns and all the great blues bands. He expresses the heart of the Apollo Theatre, let me tell you.

Dion DiMucci
Most bands out there are basically pretty boring. I try to affect people inside their bodies.

Prince
For me, I would get so frustrated because I would see these other bands just whip by us.

Fred Armisen

Jack Antonoff
Folk music is music that everyday people can play, and it inspired a lot of people to make their own music. That trailed into making your own pop music, and that’s why garage bands started springing up everywhere.

Stone Gossard
We went into that knowing that we were never going to sell a major record ’cause we didn’t sound like these bands, so I just thought this was an opportunity for us to make the kind of records that we wanted and make some money at the same time.

Buzz Osborne
I’ve never supported this concept of going after Napster. I think the rock bands who fought this were wrong.

I’d say that 98 percent of the bands we’ve played with through the years have either broken up or are stuck in some kind of ’80s revival now.

David Bryan
I think once I started writing my own music and having my own bands, that’s when I got more of a focus on what I wanted to do, personally.

I don’t like to talk about other bands in interviews.

Win Butler
When children start to speak they find their own voice by imitating the sounds around them. It would follow that bands do the same. Bands will find their own voice at some point.

Greg Ginn
I’m always forming bands.

Al Jourgensen
Normally when I work with bands I’m trying to refine and improve what’s already there.

Jerry Harrison

Penelope Spheeris
I’m indie through and through. I’ve always gone out with boys in bands.

Denise Morrison
When I was a kid. I started writing when I was 13. I got my first electric guitar when I was 13, but I’d always been singing. I had my first little acoustic when I was six. But I started being in bands when I was 13. Crappy rock bands, avant-garde things where we’d, like, ‘wanna go against the norm, man.’

Jeff Buckley
I have way too shady a background to get into politics. I was a crazy kid – I was in bands, and I don’t think I’d get very far before people started digging up stuff I didn’t want them to see.

Michael Kelly
A lot of bands that reunite do it for the wrong reasons. They do it for the bucks and everybody can sense it.

I think that boy bands as a whole are really coming back.

Carlos Pena, Jr.
I don’t want to continue to do what I did when I was 20. I would like to continue to develop myself and not continue to hang around with bands.

Until I was about 16 years old, my dream was to be a musician. I played in rock bands and jazz bands. Then I decided to be an actor and kept the stable career of ‘jazz pianist’ as my safety net.

I love different eclectic bands. I love Phoenix and Kimber.

CeeLo Green
In the studio, you can always stop, rewind and do it again, but on stage, you can never do that – it’s a different energy. It separates good bands from bad bands, being able to play, perform and really capture an audience. I think that’s the hardest part.

Alison Mosshart
One of the great things that I loved about doing solo – which I ended up doing because I was too shy to ever try out for bands back in the day – I could sit there with a list of songs and ‘paint away’ for the show.

Patty Griffin
Now, jazz institutions are more readily available for young people, but for me, the institutions were the bands that I was in. When I worked with Clark Terry, that was the beginning of school for me, and Harry Belafonte and Sergio Mendes, they were all my universities.

I’m also performing regularly in Southern California with two bands. As a solo artist doing acoustic sets and a member of the Jenerators, my rock n roll band that has been around for a long time now.

I think everyone’s trying to come up together and bring up other bands along the way, and we’ve always been really blessed to have bands like Metallica and Iron Maiden take us under their wing and say nice things about us.

Zacky Vengeance
I do love dance music. I love Daft Punk. I mean, I was a child in the ’80s, so bands like the Eurythmics and just so many great ’80s bands were dance bands, but they had the whole soul thing happening, too.

Corin Tucker
Not even the creators of ‘Rock Band’ could possibly believe that playing the game is tantamount to making your own music. There is, however, a sad similarity between ‘Rock Band’ and some actual bands, and that is the attempt at realness.

Carrie Brownstein
We were watching bands like the Ramones and Blondie and other bands beginning to ignite.

Jerry Only
When I was a kid, it was so important to listen only to bands nobody had ever heard of. I missed out on so much interesting music because of my need to listen to a psychobilly band that only two people knew about… Because I thought I was cool.

Andy Biersack
It was a scene in the sense that we were all close and we all knew each other before the different bands had really formed. We used to rehearse in the same place.

Arto Lindsay
Bands on tour are very good cultivators of what’s the avant-garde of comedy.

Jonathan Krisel
Bands are actively seeking more film involvement – because the days of recording albums and MTV and even touring, to some extent, are gone.

John Hillcoat
It’s no longer unusual for real avant-garde composers to have been in a band, and for bands to be interested in a wide range of music. Look at how artists like Aphex Twin are influenced by Nancarrow and Stockhausen.

Jonny Greenwood
Most bands don’t work out. A small unit democracy is very, very difficult.

Bruce Springsteen
I hate bands that hang around, like, 10 years too long – they’re like the drunk at a party you can’t get rid of.

Al Jourgensen
I was mostly influenced by bands like Black Sabbath and Judas Priest – Metallica’s ‘Kill ‘Em All’ was also a hell of an inspiration.

Dimebag Darrell
The movie business is very difficult but the music business is just impossible. So I’ll play in bands and record and play songs with other people, but for me it’s a form of expression that all I need is me. I don’t need cameras or agents, I can just have a piano and sing and feel totally verified.

Jeremy Renner
Best two rock voices I’ve heard in a last few years both have been from grunge bands: it’s Eddie Vedder and the other one is Chris Cornell from Soundgarden.

Bruce Dickinson
I played in rhumba bands, mickey mouse bands; all kinds of bands.

Stan Getz
There are bands like Imagine Dragon, Grouplove, and fun. who have come along and shifted the way that rock can sound.

Brendon Urie
Around ’93, the radio started playing ‘Loser’ by Beck and ‘Cut Your Hair’ by Pavement, and then I got way into Pavement. That was kind of a gateway drug into indie rock. I got all their B-sides, and I got that ‘Hey Drag City’ comp, so I got into all those Drag City bands.

Kurt Vile
That’s what bands like Pink Floyd and bands like Rush and even the Metallica of this world have, which is long, ambitious songs that pull in all different directions.

Zacky Vengeance
I was never able to get through Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. I’ve never been able to make it through. And I love the Smashing Pumpkins, they’re one of my favorite bands ever, but I’ve never been able to listen to the whole thing all the way through.

John Wozniak
I don’t like it when bands don’t want to play that one song everybody wants to hear. I think that’s cheating everybody, and I think it’s selfish of an artist to do that.

David Bryan
I have a lot of compact discs. I need them for radio play and convenience. Many bands and artists I am a fan of don’t always release their work on vinyl, so I take what they feel like giving me.

Henry Rollins
There’s always gonna be rock n’ roll bands, there’s always gonna be kids that love rock n’ roll records, and there will always be rock n’ roll.

Dave Grohl
A lot of rock bands are truly a legend in their own minds.

David Lee Roth
Frank’s bands could play the hardest stuff and make it seem like no big deal.

Dweezil Zappa
Marriage feels like an industry with catering and really expensive bands.

Rashida Jones
I loved hard-rock bands, and I loved songwriters who told stories.

Art Alexakis
The only time I ever really got into rap was back in the early ’90s, and bands like A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Gang Starr. Musically, they were really interesting. But when hip-hop acts start sampling Sting or Phil Collins, then I just don’t get it at all.

Paul Weller
Radiohead is one of the bands I appreciate. That’s a great career band. It’s not like critics are comparing us to a flash in the pan.

Joshua Ostrander
One of the pleasant duties of America’s most famous announcers during the relatively short swing era of the big bands was to host late-night remotes from some of the most famous ballrooms throughout the country.

Nick Clooney
When I was in bands, I always liked the demo best.

Agnes Obel
Insurrection by means of guerrilla bands is the true method of warfare for all nations desirous of emancipating themselves from a foreign yoke. It is invincible, indestructible.

Giuseppe Mazzini
I think sometimes men find it easier to be a carer than an accessory. I mean, most women I know in bands are pretty lonely. Guys don’t want to travel around with you. I know loads of women who do it, but guys don’t do it. They’re not brought up for it.

Viv Albertine
Our greatest hope comes from the knowledge that the Savior broke the bands of death. His victory came through His excruciating pain, suffering, and agony. He atoned for our sins if we repent.

James E. Faust
Leave bands, go back to obscurity if I choose to, without a great sense of loss of security because it’s all been based on the fact that I did it on my own or was doing, enjoying doing it on my own in the first place.

Eric Clapton
I think that’s given inspiration to other musicians. I know, particularly through the 90s, a lot of bands would cite Rush as an influence. I don’t think it was so much our music, but more the way we really stuck to our guns.

Alex Lifeson
There are always young bands playing in their garages. A lot of punk rock is not going to be in the mainstream. It’s below the radar. The beauty of it is that you’re not supposed to always know. It’s subterranean.

Billie Joe Armstrong
Bands today have to learn their craft by putting the hard work in that we did when we were young performers.

Elton John
There have always been female artists and singers putting bands together all the time. But we were not always getting credit for that because we didn’t know any better.

Betty Wright
I made the big turnaround in the early Nineties when I started hearing all the tenth generation punk bands like Green Day and Offspring and all those people. It just made me fall in love with punk again and remember my roots, and since that time I’ve always wanted to do more of that kind of music again.

Jane Wiedlin
I’d always wanted to work in the studio and experiment with sounds. Things that I’m really influenced by and that I love are like The Beatles and Radiohead, and all those records by bands whose music is really involved.

Regina Spektor
When I got my record deal at Atlantic, at the time, ‘indie’ wasn’t a style of music: it was a kind of label. And I think, eventually, the bands that ended up on those labels began to be branded as ‘indie bands,’ and then it became a genre.

Kristian Bush
I see the merit in religion, and I see the need for faith and hope and sometimes people who are more snide look at people who are religious, particularly people in rock bands, and they’ll say, ‘Oh that’s dumb, you believe in whatever,’ but I think everybody believes in something.

Andy Biersack
Bands from Akron have a sense of humor and don’t tend to take themselves too seriously.

Dan Auerbach
In New Orleans, people are still influenced by one another. You got these bands that play every week on Frenchmen Street, and on their breaks, they might go see the reggae band that’s right next door. You might get the musicians from the reggae band to sit in with the brass musicians. Everyone is having fun.

Trombone Shorty
My father was a jazz tenor sax player. He played in a lot of big bands. So I had that sound around me all the time. The first record that really caught my ear was Clifford Brown’s ‘Brownie Eyes.’ I grew up listening to John Coltrane and Illinois Jacquet. This is where I come from… I love improvisational music.

Meshell Ndegeocello
When I was in college in Philly, there was a lot of post-punks… hardcore… like, rock. Sixties, retro, proto-Strokes kind of bands.

Tim Heidecker
I love bands that can collaborate, and I feel like the Rolling Stones wouldn’t be nearly as great as they are if it wasn’t for them having a real group.

Britt Daniel
I know that starting out as a young band, it’s really easy to get lost with bands that sound the same or with the plethora of music that’s out there.

Kellin Quinn
Soundgarden was incredibly democratic, and I was really proud of that. I felt like we got along better than most bands we toured with and most people we knew. And at the same time, when you’re that democratic and concerned with each other’s opinions, you’re always concerned with what the other people think.

Chris Cornell
When I first started playing in a band, before the Beatles, working bands played standards and they saved their rock material til the end of the night when they were really stretched out. It could be pretty lame.

Wayne Kramer
Good bands you can kind of lose, then come back and realize they’re still good.

Marisha Pessl
I was more influenced by players like Randy Rhoads and Eddie Van Halen than by the guys in southern rock bands.

Dimebag Darrell
When certain bootleg companies started off and they would take maybe ten per cent of whatever they got and help fuel new bands, which I’m cool with, I think that’s a good idea. Most of the record companies are not doing that.

David Coverdale
On our first album, ‘Sounding the Seventh Trumpet,’ we were listening to more obscure heavy metal bands and hardcore bands.

Zacky Vengeance
For new bands, I think a major label is the safest place to be. Independent labels are the ones getting away with murder. A lot of them are hobbyists who rip-off young bands, taking advantage of people who would never get signed to a major.

Jack White
I’ve sung background for a couple of bands.

Randy Jackson
Everyone’s gonna have their opinion, everyone’s gonna have their favorite bands. The best way I can describe it is music is like food, either you love it, hate it, or are indifferent about it. Or you grow up and acquire a taste for it.

Phil Anselmo
I love a lot of the New York bands, but Patti Smith stands out. I just read ‘Just Kids’ and it’s an inspirational, well-written account of an emerging New York artist in the late seventies.

James Iha
Hardcore bands were coming out with names like Urban Waste and The Mob, you know, a lot of kind of tough names. So Beastie Boys was the stupidest name we could come up with. And unfortunately, it stuck.

Ad-Rock
As a kid, you put musicians on a pedestal – well, I did. The more you meet bands, and the more you hang around them, you can have normal conversations.

Sharon Van Etten
When I was in high school, there were these British blues-rock-type bands with really good guitar players that would jam on one song for half an hour. And as much as I was amazed by some of those guitar players, seeing them prompted me to make a note that that’s not something I could do.

David Byrne
I do think that some bands seem to be dabbling in the rock-hip-hop world and are not necessarily serious about it.

Fred Durst
If it wasn’t for John Peel, there would be no Joy Division and no New Order. He was one of the few people to give bands that played alternative music a chance to get heard, and he continued to be a champion of cutting-edge music throughout his life.

Bernard Sumner
I played in garage bands and rock and roll bands when I was in junior high and high school and saw some of the great talents of all time in the local area where I lived.

David Cassidy
I can’t stand tribute bands. It’s nice, bless ’em, but it’s not right. They can’t capture the right spirit. You never see a tribute comedian, a tribute Les Dawson.

Dave Davies
I did a lot of writing for a lot of different kinds of bands that I was in and out of during those five years and that left me with a little body of songs that I liked better when I played alone, so I ended up going out solo and very soon made my first album.

Bruce Cockburn
There’s also a lot of gritty Americana type of bands. I actually have a lot of Britpop on my iPod, too.

Jeff Vandermeer
Old-school rock bands, and blues bands, too, are kind of a dying breed.

Gary Rossington
I grew up listening to blues and rock n’ roll and other music, but, legitimately, the Stones is one of my favorite bands in the world.

Ato Essandoh
Bulletin boards are sort of the garage bands of cyberspace.

Mitch Kapor
We didn’t gel with Poison and the Bon Jovi. Bon Jovi was the best of the pop metal bands, but we never fit in with the hair metal stuff. We were never as hip as the Chili Peppers. We were in the middle.

Gary Cherone
I know some bands that are precious about their new ideas. They’re conscious of the fact that people can – even from mobile phones – begin to get clearer and better recordings of the songs… so they’re a lot more hesitant to play them.

Paolo Nutini
I sometimes think of not doing Twitter or Facebook anymore, but that’s how people find their favorite bands and comedians.

Mike Birbiglia
When we started, a lot of bands sounded really different from one another.

David Byrne
Bands like Nirvana had theatrical sensibilities, playing with image, challenging assumptions people were making about them, the apex being Kurt Cobain in a dress to make a point.

Amanda Palmer
I don’t understand how those old bands did it. We worked out early on that if we did three gigs in a row and went out afterwards, we’d lose our voices. We know our limits.

Winston Marshall
A lot of times, bands will go on tour, and people only wanna hear the hits. Luckily, our fans are receptive to our new stuff.

Mike McCready
I have so many indie bands on my iPod. What I don’t really understand is the attitude that if a band is unknown, they’re good, and if they get fans, then you move on to the next band.

Taylor Swift
Yeah, my son likes a lot of guitar bands. He gave me something the other day which was really good. He’ll burn a CD for me full of things that he has, so he’s a pretty good call if I want to check some of that stuff out… The other two aren’t quite into that yet.

Bruce Springsteen
I wouldn’t know any newer bands. We’re past the pimple stage.

Angus Young
If the label presents them with a contract that the band don’t want to sign, all the label has to do is wait. There are a hundred other bands willing to sign the exact same contract, so the label is in a position of strength.

Steve Albini
I went to college in Iowa for a little bit and tried to get some bands together there. That was about a year of my life.

Dave Keuning
We came from a small town where there was no music scene or no other bands, and we decided to put ours together and go for it.

Ed Kowalczyk
Two of my favorite bands, Blackberry Smoke and Black Stone Cherry, I just think both of those bands are a good new progressive kind of Southern Rock that’s a little different than us but still has a rootsy thing going on.

Johnny Van Zant
I feel like I’m waving the flag for musicianship, trying to bring back bands that can play.

Jonathan Davis
Texas is a hotbed of insanely good bands and musicians.

Henry Rollins
I idolised bands like Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins, who wanted to reach as many people as they could.

Nate Ruess
We’re never gonna see bands like Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath again. It’s over.

Till Lindemann
I often explain it to people that if you listen to a Who record and then go see the Who live, it’s like two different bands. That’s how Humble Pie worked. We were definitely a lot more ferocious live because of the energy that the entire population of us had.

Peter Frampton
I love jam bands, but I still like a three-and-a-half-minute rock song.

Darius Rucker
Growing up, I played in different bands and did a lot of self-booked touring and traveling around, and my sister was driving us on tour, and we’re playing for nobody and literally begging my friends that I went to high school with to buy tickets to our shows.

Lauv
He’s a million rubber bands in his resilience.

Alan K. Simpson
GYBE are among my, erm, two favourite Montreal bands, Arcade Fire being the other.

David Bowie
I’m not one of those people who sits around knowing all bands and going to gigs all the time.

Nicholas Hoult
There can be a wrong time – it’s happened to countless bands where they release their first record on a major label and never learned what they maybe should have learned on an indie.

Brian Fallon
We’re not one of those bands that throws the names of all their songs in a hat and pulls them out right before they go on stage.

Lindsey Buckingham
I don’t usually try to rely on songs to woo a girl, but I think Coldplay can get a girl in the mood… or make her cry, one or the other. I used to play in cover bands; we sure did our fair share of Coldplay. I like ‘Viva La Vida.’

Mark Salling
Hezbollah and the government are only two of 18 political factions in Lebanon, most of them armed. There are militant Christian groups, Palestinian radicals, al-Qaida, Druze militias and even armed bands of Marxists still operating in Lebanon.

Richard Engel
My mother did play classical piano, not that well. And actually, my father sang with the big bands – he sang with Bob Crosby’s band – but he had to give up show business when his father died. He had to come back to Montgomery and take over the furniture store.

Toni Tennille
You had your black bands, and you had your white bands, and if you mixed the two, you found less places to play.

Clarence Clemons
There are a lot of bands who claim to be punk and they only play the music, they have no clue what it’s all about. It’s a lifestyle. It’s not about popularity and all that crap.

Billie Joe Armstrong
I’ve had people call me from bands that are very popular, and they’re like, ‘What do we do? We want to do what you do.’ It’s almost impossible to do what I do, because you would have to start in 1980. You can’t just do it.

Ian MacKaye
All the classic bands that have been around forever, they came up gradually.

Rob Zombie
As much as I love Slipknot, I don’t want that to carry over into what I do for Stone Sour. I want both bands to stand on their own.

Corey Taylor
Of all the grunge bands to come out of Seattle, Alice in Chains were the greatest.

Dimebag Darrell
That taught me one lesson which is that you’re naive to believe that bands can change the world. Bands are very naive to think that just if their audience thinks that they can change the world, that they can. That was quite a lesson for my career, really.

Billy Bragg
I always felt different because I didn’t pick one specific clique or group to be a part of, and I didn’t choose one thing to be. I cheered, sang in chorus, was in student government, played in rock bands, went to dirt races in western PA… My interests have always been diverse.

Cassadee Pope
I’ve created several musical trends, really. That’s not because I’m so far out and fabulous. It’s because most bands have no ideas of their own. They’re so desperate they’ll grab at any old straw.

John Lydon
Bands always call me when they are in need of a boost and I come in and put them back on top.

Nile Rodgers
Being able to be one of the headline bands on Warped Tour was a dream I had since I was in middle school.

Andy Biersack
To build my core strength, I do push-ups, sit-ups, crunches, on-the-spot running with bands, and individual runs.

P. R. Sreejesh
I was at a slight disadvantage in that I had never played in bands or done any performances before, and that’s just as important as writing, recording, and putting records out. It’s been a lot of hard work, balanced with a lot of pinch-myself moments of touring in crazy parts of the world.

Washed Out
I like to dance. I always make my husband dance with me when we are in the kitchen to whatever gets us moving. One my favorite is bands is Mana, but I like all kinds of music.

Catherine Cortez-Masto
When I go into rehearsal rooms and meet with bands, they’re genuinely excited to be with me because of what I’ve done as an artist, not because of anything else. There’s that whole celebrity rock star thing, and artists are into artists who have been able to achieve success their way.

Nikki Sixx
I think it would be very scary and very confusing if I didn’t understand where people are coming from, but I’ve felt the exact same way for so many other bands, growing up. It’s not really a big deal.

Jon Crosby
When we learned to play in bands, what we were covering was equal part the Velvet Underground and the Grateful Dead. That would defy the logic that somehow these things don’t fit in the same musical well.

Bryce Dessner
James, that’s a bad situation. I’m not saying it’s not repairable, but it’s pretty far. When you go from being in one of the best bands in the world to some cover band… as far as I’m concerned, he was playing down at the pub.

Billy Corgan
I’ve discovered all kinds of music and done all kinds of music over the past 40 years, from playing tango with Piazzolla to all the different bands I’ve had.

Gary Burton
I’ve always been in touring bands in some capacity.

Chris Stapleton
I love punk, I love a lot of British Invasion bands, I love garage bands.

Anna Sui
I have this rubber band that I have all the time on my wrist, and sometimes when I get nervous or anxious, I’ll do this twiddle thing with my finger and I’ll snap the rubber band. A lot of people use rubber bands to cope with things like anxiety and depression and addiction.

Tate McRae
I know it’s financially lucrative to go out on my own, but I don’t like it. It’s really hard work, just the performance aspect. I like people who look like they’ve been together for too long and sound like they’ve been together too long. I like rock n’ roll bands.

Jason Isbell
Sonic Youth is one of my favorite bands.

Stephanie Savage
I started playing the drums at five years old and used to listen to a lot of screamo bands like Asking Alexandria, Dream Theater, and Attack Attack!

Rich Brian
So I’ve had lots of different bands over the years who have stayed with me for certain tours.

Joan Armatrading
I think maybe people see bands and musicians as some sort of superhero unrealistic sport that happens in another dimension where it’s not real people and not real emotions. So, I grew up listening to Beatles records on my floor. That’s how I learned how to play guitar. If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t be a musician.

Dave Grohl
I just wanted to do a music show, with the whole realm of music from Ella Fitzgerald to rock bands like Cream to Kenny Rogers. We had a lot of country, but we did every kind of music. The Monkees were on, and so was Johnny Cash.

Glen Campbell
But, then again, I wouldn’t call myself an indie-rock supporter even if there are some really good bands out there and there will always be some real good new bands.

Stephen Malkmus
